Stonehenge Directions and Location
General Information
Need directions to Stonehenge? Stonehenge is about 2 miles west of Amesbury in Wiltshire, approximately 90 miles from London. Numerous tour companies offer day trips from London, or you can choose to drive. The nearest railway station is Salisbury, with regular trains from Waterloo Station in London.
Road Access
Location: 2 miles W of Amesbury on the junction of A303 and A344/A360.
From Heathrow Airport:
- Follow signs for M4 West.
- Exit at junction 4b onto M25 South.
- Follow signs for Gatwick Airport.
- Look for the Basingstoke sign (junction 12) to the M3.
- Continue on the M3 to A303 Andover (junction 8).
- Follow A303 until you reach a roundabout, pass through it, and in 2 miles, bear right onto A344.
- In about 500 meters, you'll find car parking on the right-hand side.
From Gatwick Airport:
- Take M23 to M25, following signs for Heathrow Airport.
- Follow the same route as from Heathrow from step 4 above.
Train Access
The nearest train station to Stonehenge is Salisbury, about 9.5 miles away. From London, you'll need to depart from Waterloo Station. Trains run approximately every hour, taking about 1.5 hours to reach Salisbury. The first train usually starts around 6:00 AM, with the last around midnight. Fares vary, but expect around £25 for a return ticket. Note reduced service during winter, Sundays, and Bank Holidays.

Coach Access
Coaches run from Heathrow Airport and Victoria Coach Station in Central London. Alight at Amesbury, from where you can walk (about 2 miles), take a local bus, or get a taxi. Coaches run approximately 3 times daily, with a travel time of about 2 hours. Tickets can be bought on the coach, at the station, or through ticket agents for National Express (around £12 return).
From Gatwick, you'll need to transfer at either Heathrow or Victoria.
